Interview with Barret Harvey | African Spearfishing Diaries
This interview with Barret Harvey starts off with the background behind several recent videos on the ‘African Spearfishing Diaries’ YouTube Channel. I was curious as I had seen the 2-3 of his latest videos and they are froth-makers. He has continued to pump out a new 8-12 minute spearfishing vid every week. We also chat about locations and species with plenty of practical tips and ideas along the way. At the 59 minute mark we get right into the skillset required to become a spearfishing videographer. Jose Debasa’s photography has been inspiring me for ages. He has a unique style that really puts you in the perspective of the underwater hunter (check out some examples here). In this episode we dial in on Jose’s experience and progression filming and editing spearfishing videos. To see some of the videos spoken about during the interview you can peruse the SpearHeads YouTube channel here.
About Jose Debasa
Jose’s photography journey started in his teens capturing the wildlife of the greater Florida area. His spearfishing experience soon demanded that he partner the two passions and after some hefty purchases he was good to go. Years later Jose now collaborates with some talented guys from the South East of the USA in something they call SpearHeads. Their films have developed significantly over the years with new experience, equipment and the development of systems to improve everything from capturing the action to producing the finished film. Jose is very much the family man residing in Miami, Florida with his wife and children. Check out some of his photography here.

Finally an episode dedicated to using a GoPro for spearfishing! This episode covers everything from after purchase to post edit GoPro use.
About this episode
We start the episode in the studio, with Turbo and I giving a run through on some of the common questions we get asked and then offer some creative advice about how to solve these problems. We discuss;
Water on the lens
Fog in the housing
The GoMask and other mount techniques as well as some of the challenges
After that we put some media production questions to our Producer Pat Dwyer. Questions we ask Pat include;
Where can we find music to use (legally) for our YouTube Spearfishing Videos?
What is B-roll footage?
How do we capture and use the B-Roll footage in the editing stage?
After that we move on and discover some hard core hacks and tips from Cripps and Takka, the couple behind Underwater Ally Productions. This information combined with Turbo’s Tips provides a tonne of information so that hopefully you can skip some of the lessons many learn the hard way.
We finish off with a big discussion with Aaron Chasse. Aaron’s one of the guys involved in the SpearHeads spearfishing video collaborative who operate mostly out of Florida. In this part of the discussion we focus on essential accessories, settings, and working together to a plan to create good spearfishing films.

This Drones for spearfishing episode was inspired partially by watching Drone footage that uniquely captured a spearfishing adventure. The first guest in this episode, Adreno Manager Kahlee Andrews is a former womens spearfishing champion and has taken numerous videos of spearfishing drone footage. Kahlee has been using a DJI Phantom 3 Professional [link here] but she also talks about what she wants to purchase next. I ask Kahlee about her experience’s with drones and how Drones can be used effectively by spearo’s.

In the second part of the show I am joined by Alan Perlman, the founder of UAV Coach. UAV coach is an online drone pilot training center providing courses, free guides and more for aspiring Drone pilots (both commercial and amateur). Alan and Kahlee both answer a range of questions that I had after buying my own Drone and wanting to learn more about the higher end Amateur drones such as the DJI Mavick Pro (here) and the GoPro Karma both of which are yet to be officially released. If you are an adventure based videographer or photographer this is a good introduction into starting and using Drones.

24:00 Alan Perlman from UAV Coach
We start off chatting about what inspired him to create UAV coach and he shares a story about his first serious Drone accident. I also talk a bit about my experience with the Cheerwing full manual FPV style Drone I started with (I bought this one of Amazon landed on my doorstep for less than $100).
This is an interview chock full of good actionable intel for spearfishing! Aaron Chasse, the founder of Speared Apparel and a SpearHeads TV collaborator takes our GoPro Q&A and runs with it. We ask him about the various mount options (head/gun/frame/etc), other critical accessories for spearfishing, red lens, crucial settings, post editing tips, mounts and more. In this chat you will find out how the SpearHeads crew have slowly grown and developed their films (awesome tutorials and information for spearo’s btw).
Aaron also talks about how to approach potential spearfishing sponsors and shares some good tips about what sponsors are looking for. He includes the key information to use when you email in a sponsorship proposition. He added that Speared are not currently looking for divers at the moment as they have a number of great spearo’s on-board already. In this audio interview we also hear some great insight into the Aspetto spearfishing hunting technique and how Aaron and some of his friends apply it effectively. He breaks it down and talks about how to slowly improve your diving until you can hold bottom time. And then once you do start to hold bottom time, how to use the aspetto technique to bring the fish in.

How To Get Sponsored
The decision to sponsor is never taken lightly by spearfishing brands, sponsorship needs to make sense for the business.
A few points were;
Tag brands in your photos, sometimes brands will pick up spearo’s to sponsor after 6 months or more of good posting
Think about the image of spearfishing and what spearfishing brands want to be associated with
Play the long game, be patient, build a following and get interaction with followers
Instagram and Facebook were two social platforms identified that are popular for spearfishing
“Do it right” was the big takeaway.
